Cooperative Learning Grants

Program Description:
The CTL is engaged in expanding the use of cooperative learning* at DU. This is in response to the overwhelming amount of research that shows that student learning is improved when cooperative learning techniques are used in large and small classes, and at all levels of the curriculum*.
Even though the research shows that cooperative learning, when done correctly, is effective, faculty members need direction in how to develop and implement cooperative learning activities. Therefore, the CTL has a program that is designed to help faculty learn how to put cooperative learning into practice. This program begins with a workshop during Summer 2008 on cooperative learning and how to engage students in meaningful ways in cooperative learning activities. After the workshop, the participants will spend time working on their cooperative learning activities, coming together several times during this development period to discuss their progress and learn from each other. A DU Portfolio Community website will facilitate interactions among the group members and supplement face-to-face meetings.
The program begins with a half-day workshop on the basics of cooperative learning, why it works, and how to design and manage cooperative learning activities in the classroom. After the workshop, the participants spend time working on their cooperative learning activities, coming together again to discuss their progress and learn from each other at a second half-day workshop. Each participant receives a $1500 stipend, half at the end to the workshops and half after implementing cooperative learning and completing the surveys.
Award:
Successful applicants receive a $1500 stipend.
Due Date:
The due date is May 15, 2009.
Applicant Selection:
Applicants will be selected for this program to achieve a diverse group of committed individuals, with faculty members from different disciplines and different professional levels represented. It is anticipated that 20 people will be selected for this program. All faculty participants will be expected to give presentations to their colleagues on their cooperative learning activities. This workshop is for any faculty member who has not participated during previous years.
Proposal Submission:
Proposals from across the university are sought.
Faculty members submit a two-page proposal which is evaluated by the CTL Faculty advisory board in early June. Grant Assessment:
Assessment activities will be carried out by the CTL in collaboration with the Office of Academic Assessment and the faculty participants.
