2009 New Faculty Orientation and Workshop Series

Now in its seventh year, this workshop series aims to provide relevant information about teaching at DU, discuss effective teaching techniques, and allow new faculty members from different divisions to meet each other and develop relationships that will last for years to come.

Drop by to learn about the many educational technology tools available to DU faculty members (Blackboard, DU CourseMediaTM, DU Portfolio, Clickers, and more). Demonstrations, Q&A, and one-on-one support will be provided.



New Faculty Workshop Series

Each breakfast session is designed to explore questions related to common teaching issues through practical, hands-on activities and discussions facilitated by seasoned DU faculty and CTL staff members. Each session will also showcase different teaching strategies and educational technologies. Short readings will accompany each session and participants are encouraged to bring their burning questions and to share their experiences.

How do I best structure my class to achieve learning?  What is considered an effective course syllabus? What different teaching strategies or technologies are there to help me achieve my course objectives? 

New Faculty Workshop #2 - Engaging Students

What different strategies and technologies can I use to engage students in the classroom?  How can I create class discussions in which students actively participate? How do I manage laptops in the classroom?

New Faculty Workshop #3 - Grading Practices

October 9, 9:00 - 11:00

How do I use tests and assignments to motivate my students and encourage learning?  How can I get feedback on their learning? How do I manage all this grading? What do I do if I suspect academic dishonesty?

New Faculty Workshop #4 - Diversity in the Classroom

How do I create a safe and welcoming space for all students?  How do I handle classroom issues that arise? How do I handle student requests for special accommodations?  

New Faculty Workshop #5 - Time Management 

October 23, 9:00 - 11:00

How do I balance all the various duties and responsibilities I have as a new faculty member? A panel of recent new faculty members will be on hand to share their experiences and answer questions.
